If I had to choose one month of the year when Tenerife shows its most harmonious face, without crowds, without extreme temperatures and with nature in full bloom – I would put it precisely on May. This is not a post for temperature record hunters or fans of rainfall statistics. It’s a story about what Tenerife looks like in May from the inside, when you’re no longer a tourist and start to feel part of the island.

Tenerife weather May

Is it cold in Tenerife in the morning?

May mornings in Tenerife are like slow inhalations – the sun rises gently, not immediately scorching the landscape. In the Anaga mountains, mists still drift down the slopes, and in La Laguna it’s worth putting on something warmer – 16-18°C at 8:00 am is standard.

In the south, around Costa Adeje or El Médano, the day starts earlier, warmer and drier. The beaches are still semi-empty, and the water – well, you have to brave it, because the ocean can’t be tamed quickly. 20°C in the ocean is more than enough for surfers, but swimming enthusiasm depends on personal comfort limits.

Weather in Tenerife in May – air and water temperature

May is that rare moment when Tenerife hits perfectly to the taste of most visitors – it is neither too hot, too windy nor too humid. In the south, temperatures hover around 24-26°C, pleasantly warm, but not tiring. In the shade you can sit without air conditioning. In the sun – you sunbathe unnoticed.

Occasionally there is a light breeze from Africa, bringing with it dust (kalima), but in May this is rather rare and a temporary phenomenon. Blue skies are an almost guaranteed sight for most of the month.

May is also the ideal time to enjoy guided tours or attractions in Tenerife:

  • roundtrips – in May the temperatures are pleasant and you can comfortably explore without the heat – check out the offer of our tours
  • ATVs or buggies – you can go to the Teide Volcano in an unusual way. It’s a good dose of adrenaline and beautiful views – read more here
  • cruises – during this period, when it is not yet hot, you can go to watch dolphins and whales living in the Ocean waters around the island – this cruise is loved by our customers
  • scuba diving with an instructor – if you fancy an unusual experience, we suggest scuba diving. It’s a great opportunity to start your adventure with the underwater world – check it out

Cooler evenings

As the sun hides behind the mountains, Tenerife quiets down. Temperatures drop to a pleasant 18-20°C, which means you can dine on the terrace, but you’ll probably reach for a light sweatshirt or sweater. May evenings are the best time to discover local wines from Tacoronte or Icod de los Vinos. They surprise you with their depth, especially when you sip them while looking at the illuminated Teide.

Tenerife weather 2026

Canary Islands weather in 2026 – the beginning of the year, in terms of weather, was surprising for everyone. It abounded in storms (borrasca) – the strongest of which occurred in March 2026. Almost all the Canary Islands felt its effects. Flooding and landslides took their toll. However, the heavy rainfall resulted in lush vegetation, which we usually can no longer enjoy at this time of year. However, the forecast for May 2026 is very promising. April has already begun with beautiful sunshine and higher temperatures, and locals and tourists are eager to enjoy the beaches and charms of Tenerife.

In 2026, we can also enjoy snow on the Teide volcano for much longer than usual. Usually, the summit of Teide is snow-covered for 2 – 3 weeks. This year, however, the snow lasts much longer, giving us beautiful views.

Are there a lot of tourists in Tenerife in May?

The Canary Islands is a place where the tourist season lasts all year round. In May, however, there are fewer tourists, no crowds, but restaurants, attractions and tours operate without change. It’s a time when locals are not yet tired of the season, and tourists act more like explorers. The perfect balance.

Nature: the last breath of spring

If you go to the mountains, such as the Teno massif or the Vilaflor area, you’ll notice that May is the last month in which green really plays first fiddle. Fields of flowers, lavender bushes and almond trees finish their bloom before the summer sun makes them dry heirlooms.

Is Tenerife in May good for a vacation?

A vacation in Tenerife in May will be ideal for those who are looking for harmony. For those who want some sun, but not stifling heat. For those who like activity, but not in a line. It’s a time when the island breathes – and gives you room to breathe along with it.

Should you pack for a vacation in Tenerife?

When packing for your Tenerife vacation, remember a few essentials:

  • Swimsuit and flip-flops – May is the time when you can already successfully enjoy swimming in the ocean or at the pool,
  • Comfortable covered shoes – these will come in handy for a trip to the Anaga Mountains or the Teide Volcano, as well as on the trails,
  • Sweatshirt or light jacket – for cooler evenings and mornings
  • Sun protection – even if the sun doesn’t “burn” it “burns”
  • physical driver’s license – if you want to rent a car or use any moto attraction (ATVs, buggies, jeeps, etc) you will need a physical driver’s license, not an app
