La Gomera – Canary Islands

La Gomera, Isla Verde, or Island of Green. Is this true? Can the green of the island of La Gomera really make you speechless? We checked it during our day trip from Tenerife to La Gomera with a Polish guide, and we’ll tell you how it was and what you can expect on such a trip.

La Gomera – a green paradise just outside Tenerife

Just an hour by ferry from Tenerife is one of the most unspoiled and verdant islands of the entire Canary Islands? La Gomera, as it is referred to, is a true jewel of the Atlantic – mountainous, mysterious and delightfully peaceful. It enchants with its tranquility, where life moves at a slower pace and nature plays first fiddle.

It is the second smallest Canary Island with an area of just 369.76 square kilometers. It is home to just over 22,000 people. The island has a volcanic origin and a very mountainous, even dramatic landscape. It is characterized by a radial pattern of deep ravines (known as barrancos) that descend from the central mountains toward the coast.

The climate is mild and varied – wetter in the north, favoring lush vegetation, and drier and warmer in the south. This gives the island a very diverse vegetation cover, but the weather on La Gomera can vary.

La Gomera – round trip with Polish guide from Tenerife

Our adventure began at the port in the morning. However, if you are staying in the south of Tenerife (in Costa Adeje, los Cristianos, Playa Paraiso, Callao Salvaje) or in Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island, you will be picked up from under your hotel or its vicinity. We boarded the ferry and after less than an hour we disembarked at the port on La Gomera. We hopped on the bus, where a Polish guide was waiting for us, and set off on our tour.

The trip by air-conditioned bus was very comfortable. The guide en route told us interesting facts about the island and the places we passed by. And the driver … is an absolute champion! During the tour we saw, among other things:

✅ Garajonay National Park – laurel forests reminiscent of scenes from fantasy films. Moist mists, ferns, old trees covered with moss – you feel like in a fairy tale here. They made a huge impression on us. Remember to take a jacket with you, it can be chilly in the park.

✅ Viewpoints – where we saw the beauty of La Gomera, but also amazing views of Tenerife and el Teide volcano.

✅ Traditional cuisine – during the trip we went to lunch at a charming restaurant, during which we were able to sample delicacies of local cuisine, including potaje and Canarian wine. But there was a surprise waiting for us at the end

✅ “El Silbo ” whistled language demonstration – La Gomera is famous for its unique way of communicating…. whistles! We heard what “conversation” looks like without words.

After returning to the port town of San Sebastian (the town of Christopher Columbus), we took a short walk and then had time to explore this charming place on our own. In the afternoon we returned to Tenerife by ferry.
