Tenerife Carnival – The Party of the Year!

Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, is famous for its beautiful beaches, unique landscape and excellent weather all year round. But if there is something that distinguishes this island even more, it is certainly the Tenerife Carnival – one of the largest and most colourful events of its kind in the world!

A carnival full of colors and music

Carnival in Tenerife is a real explosion of colors, sounds and joy. This event is compared to the famous carnival in Rio de Janeiro, and its history dates back to the 18th century! Every year the streets of Santa Cruz are transformed into a huge stage where thousands of people party to the rhythm of samba and local music.

The focus is of course on the colourful parades, including the Gran Coso Apoteosis – the grand parade that ends the carnival. Participants show off amazing costumes that sometimes take a whole year to design! One of the unique events of the Tenerife carnival is the Burial of the Sardine (Spanish: Entierro de la Sardina), during which a parade of men dressed as mourners in black costumes takes a sardine to the square, along with a whole crowd of onlookers, to be burned. The whole thing takes place in an atmosphere of fun and celebration of life.

Carnival Queen Elections

One of the most anticipated moments is the selection of the Queen of Carnival. The candidates present dazzling dresses that can weigh up to a dozen kilograms! It is a spectacle that delights both locals and tourists.

International atmosphere

Carnival in Tenerife is not just a local celebration – every year it attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world. Anyone who visits the island at this time can become part of this extraordinary fiesta. The parties last for several weeks and take place both in the streets and in clubs, bars and on the beaches.

When is Carnival?

Tenerife Carnival takes place every winter. In 2025 it will start on January 31st and last until March 6th.
