Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the vibrant capital of Tenerife and one of the most important ports in the Canary Islands. The city combines a rich history, modern architecture, excellent year-round weather and access to beautiful beaches and local cuisine. The history of Santa Cruz de Tenerife dates back to the late 15th century. In 1494, Spanish conquistador Alonso Fernández de Lugo landed where the city is today, beginning his conquest of Tenerife. Initially, Santa Cruz was just a small port settlement dependent on the nearby town of La Laguna, which for a long time served as the island’s capital.
Thanks to its strategic location on the Atlantic, Santa Cruz quickly began to gain importance. The port became a key point on trade routes connecting Europe with America, Africa and the other Canary Islands. The city was repeatedly attacked by pirates and fleets of hostile countries.
One of the most famous events in the city’s history was the attack by the British fleet led by Admiral Horatio Nelson in 1797. Santa Cruz successfully defended itself against the invasion, and Nelson himself lost an arm during the fighting. This victory remains to this day a symbol of the courage of the residents and an important part of local identity.
In 1833, Santa Cruz de Tenerife officially became the capital of the province. For many years, Santa Cruz and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (a city in Gran Canaria) competed for the city of the capital of the Canary Island. In 1927, an agreement was reached and since then the two cities have presided over the entire archipelago in alternating four-year terms. Since then, the city has grown rapidly, becoming the administrative, cultural and economic center of northern Tenerife.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is located on the northeast coast of the island, at the foot of the Anaga mountain range. This location gives the city a slightly different climate and landscape than the southern resorts. As a result, it is greener, more authentic and less focused solely on mass tourism.
The city is characterized by wide avenues, numerous squares, parks and modern infrastructure. At the same time, many neighborhoods retain the traditional Canarian atmosphere – low, colorful townhouses, local bars and small stores run by the same families for generations.
Today, Santa Cruz is home to some 210,000 residents, making the city the largest in Tenerife. This makes the city feel a different vibe from the tourist towns, although the island lifestyle still prevails.

One of the most recognizable buildings not only of Santa Cruz, but of all of Tenerife, is the Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martín. It was designed by the famous architect Santiago Calatrava. The auditorium resembles a wave or sail floating above the ocean. The building is a landmark of the city and often appears in photos promoting the Canary Islands.
The auditorium hosts classical music concerts, operas, performances and international cultural events. Even if you don’t plan to attend an event, it’s worth seeing the building from the outside and strolling along the seaside boulevard.
Plaza de España is the city’s main square and one of the most important gathering places for locals. It features a distinctive fountain with a huge water mirror and an underground exhibition center. The square is surrounded by cafes, restaurants and administrative buildings. It is a great place to start a city tour, take a short rest or go for an evening stroll.

Parque García Sanabria is the largest urban park in the Canary Islands and a true gem of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Here you will find exotic vegetation from all over the world, fountains, walking paths and numerous sculptures. The park covers an area of 70,000 square meters.
The park is the perfect place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, go for a morning jog. Or take a family stroll in the shade of the palm and laurel trees. That’s why it’s a favorite place for locals and you can almost always find them strolling, having a picnic or just relaxing here.

This 17th-century fortress, also known as Castillo Negro, is a reminder of the city’s turbulent military past. Located right on the ocean, near the Auditorio, it is one of the best-preserved defensive monuments in Santa Cruz.
Although Santa Cruz de Tenerife is primarily a port city, it boasts one of the most beautiful and well-known beaches on the island – Playa de Las Teresitas. It is located in the San Andrés district, about 7 km from the city center.
The beach is distinguished by golden sand imported from the Sahara, a rarity in volcanic Tenerife. Thanks to the breakwaters, the water here is calm, and the gentle descent to the ocean makes it an ideal place for families with children.
Whatsmore, the beach overlooks the Anaga Mountains, and numerous beach bars (chiringuitos) offer local snacks, fresh fish and cool drinks. Playa de Las Teresitas is a great place to relax after exploring the city.
The port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has played a key role in the life of the city for centuries. Today it is one of the most important ports for cruise ships in the Atlantic. Huge cruise ships regularly call here, bringing thousands of tourists from all over the world. The presence of cruise ships contributes to the cosmopolitan nature of the city and the dynamic development of the tourist infrastructure.
One of Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s greatest assets is its excellent year-round weather. The climate is mild and subtropical, with little fluctuation in temperature.
However, it is worth remembering to take a jacket and long pants for evenings, especially in winter.
