Pino Gordo – or thick pine tree

Pino Gordo – or thick pine tree

pino gordo teneryfa - gruba sosna

In the heart of Tenerife, in the Vilaflor area, amid fields of solidified lava and forests of Canary Island pine, grows one of Tenerife’s most impressive trees – the Pino Gordo, or “Thick Pine.” It is a spectacular hero of nature that impresses not only for its size, but also for its history and symbolism for the islanders. If you’re a lover of nature, photography or simply looking for a place outside the typical tourist attractions, Pino Gordo deserves your attention.

What is Pino Gordo?

Pino Gordo is one of the oldest and largest specimens of Canary Island pine(Pinus canariensis) in Tenerife – and perhaps in the entire Canary Islands archipelago. It grows in the village of Vilaflor, the highest village on the island (about 1,400 meters above sea level), on the road leading toward the Teide volcano.

Its name – “Thick Pine” – comes, of course, from the incredible diameter of its trunk, which at its thickest point exceeds 9 meters in circumference. It is a living colossus that has survived fires, storms and human activity for centuries. For local residents, it is not only a monument to nature, but even a symbol of the perseverance and strength of nature.

Pino Gordo in numbers

While the numbers don’t fully convey the tree’s majesty, it’s worth a look:

  • Age: Estimated to be about 800 years old, although some sources say as many as 1,000.
  • Trunk circumference: Over 9.3 meters.
  • Height: about 45 meters.
  • Diameter of the crown: Extends to more than 20 meters.

For comparison – that’s about the size of a ten-story building! It takes about 8 people to embrace a tree.

Why is it unique?

Pino Gordo is not just a big tree. Its uniqueness is due to several reasons:

🌲 Resistance to fire

The Canary Island pine is one of the few pines in the world that has developed the ability to survive fires. Its thick bark protects it from fire, and once the fire has passed, the tree is able to sprout new shoots directly from the trunk – a process called epicormic regrowth. Pino Gordo has survived more than one forest fire and continues to delight in its fullness of life.

Interesting fact: Fires are common in Tenerife, especially during the summer season. The last major fire took place in August 2023. It started on August 15. It covered six municipalities and destroyed more than 2,607 hectares. Much of the area was just canary pine forests, which are already recovering.

🌲 Cultural significance

For the residents of Vilaflor and southern Tenerife, Pino Gordo is almost like a sacred natural monument. It’s a place where walkers and tourists come, but also local residents who have passed down the stories associated with the tree for generations. It is a symbol of perseverance and strength.

🌲 Unique location

The tree is located in a forest of Canary Island pine trees, which are characteristic only of the Canary Islands. It’s a unique ecosystem that contrasts wonderfully with Teide’s rugged, volcanic landscape.

Interesting facts about Pino Gordo and Canary Pines

🌍 Endemic to the Canary Islands

Canary Island pine is found only in the Canary Islands, making it one of the most unique species in Europe. It has long, flexible needles that can perfectly cope with drought and wind.

💧 A pine tree that produces water

Not literally, but… the needles of the canary pine can trap moisture from fog and dew, allowing water to be delivered to the root system and to the soil. As a result, entire pine forests have a role in keeping the ecosystem moist.

🔥 “Phoenix” forests

After a fire, many trees die – but not the Canary Island pine. It can grow back almost like a phoenix from the ashes. It is considered one of the best adapted plants for life in fire-prone conditions.

Pino Gordo – more than just a tree

In a world where tourist attractions are often reduced to “must-see” attractions, Pino Gordo stands out for its authenticity and strength of nature. It is not commercial. There are no cafes or souvenirs. There is only you, the majestic pine trees and the sound of the wind among the needles.

This tree remembers the eruptions of Teide, the arrival of the conquistadors and the first pilgrims. Today it is waiting for you – with its branches open, ready to share its peace and wisdom of nature.

Don’t miss this place if you’re looking for authenticity, the majesty of nature, and a moment of respite among the Canarian forests. Pino Gordo doesn’t scream – but it speaks more than many attractions. You just have to know how to listen.
