The Teide Astronomical Observatory in Tenerife is the largest solar observatory in the world, which has been in operation since 1964. The Canary archipelago’s location, altitude and clear skies thanks to the trade winds make it one of the three best places to observe the skies in the world, along with Chile and Hawaii.

The Teide Observatory is dedicated to solar observations and robotic astronomy, and has numerous telescopes belonging to various European countries. Scientists working here regularly publish important discoveries, including the fact that the Sun beats like a heart every five minutes!

During a tour of the astronomical observatory in Tenerife:

• you will learn about the importance of the sky in the Canary Islands, the telescopes at the Teide Observatory and the projects of the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics

• you will observe sunspots and solar flares through solar telescopes
• you will visit the interior of the night telescope and learn its history

Where do we start from?

The tour does not include transportation so you have to come to the site on your own. Take this into account when planning your time. You need to be at the gate about 30 minutes early before the scheduled time. It takes about 2h to get there from the south of the island, and about 1h from Puerto de La Cruz.
